Gala apples are a rustic red coloured apple streaked with yellow-orange. It has a thin skin and a sweet, crisp flesh that makes it an excellent apple for eating fresh. This apple is typically ready to be harvested in Ontario in early September. Gala apples were developed in New Zealand in the 1930's when a Golden Delicious apples was crossed with a Kidd's Orange Red apple. Royal Gala apples are not the same as Gala apples, they are actually the product of cultivating and encouraging a Gala sport (genetic mutation) in 1977, resulting in the darker-red Royal Gala apple variety.
