German Butterball potatoes are medium to large in size and round to oval in shape. Their texture is flaky without being dry, and has a very buttery flavour. The skin is smooth, netted, and pale yellow, and the flesh is a vibrant yellow-gold that is firm, waxy, and dense. When cooked, this gourmet variety has a creamy, tender flesh with a smooth consistency, making it a very versatile variety for steaming, baking, frying, and mashing. This American favourite doesn't require much additional flavouring or seasoning for a tasty dish.

This variety is considered a heirloom variety even though it was introduced to then commercial market in 1988. It was bred by David Ronniger of Ronniger Potato Farm in Moyie Springs, Idaho, where he specializes in pre-19th Century potato varieties.
