Ambrosia apples are a crisp and juicy apple with a sweet, low-acidic flavour. They have a soft yellow background with a rosy solid blush. These apples are typically ready for harvest in Ontario in late September to early October. This apple is great for cutting as the flesh is slow to brown from air exposure. This apple is excellent for eating, sliced for salads and fruit plates, or for baking. Due to their natural sweetness, they do not require as much sugar while baking. Ambrosia apples were discovered in the orchard of the Mennell family of Similkameen Valley, British Columbia in the 1990's. As the story goes, one harvest they discovered an apple tree with a new type of apple on it growing in their orchard, which had been planted previously with Golden Delicious and a variety of Red Delicious apple trees. This apple was so good that the tree was striped bare of the fruit right away! Ambrosia apples are the product of crossing Golden Delicious and Starking Delicious apples.
Cube them into a grain bowl with carrots for a touch of sweetness, cook them into your oatmeal or enjoy with a cheese plate to cut through the richness of the cheese and charcuterie!
