Onaway potatoes are medium to large in size and round to oblong in shape. Their skin is light brown, smooth yet slightly flaky. The flesh is firm, dense, with starchy consistency and is off-white to pale yellow in colour. When cooked, these potatoes are creamy and rich in flavour with notes of butter and hazelnut.
The high moisture content of this variety makes them perfect for mashing and pureeing. They can can also be baked and roasted, made into scalloped potatoes, and are great thickeners for soups and stews.
This cultivar was first introduced in 1956 from the National Potato Breeding Program, Crop Research Division in the USA, and is named after the lumber area in the farming community of Presque Isle County, Michigan. The first seed was planted on Aroostook Farm in Maine.
