Red Delicious apples are possibly the most universally recognizable apple, as it was the number one seller in North America from the 1940s until 2018 when the Gala apple surpassed it in sales.

Don't let that information deter you - Mass-cultivated Red Delicious apples were bred primarily for the dark, uniform red that shoppers found so appealing, and the thick skin that helped it to store longer, but not for flavour.
