This mixed bundle of six whole garlic heads makes an excellent host's gift, and is a necessity in the garlicurious' kitchen.
Mixed Bundle includes:
Ontario Giant (green string)
Russian Red (red string)
Mennonite (ME)
Italian Purple (black string)
Khabar (pink string)
Leningrad (LN)
Each coloured string represents a different variety of garlic:
Ontario Giant: (green string) Also known as 'Puslinch' this variety of garlic has a dark green string. Ontario Giant has a medium to mild rating on the spicy scale but it will surprise you with a pleasing, lingering garlic aftertaste. Their easy peel cloves also make them popular in the kitchen.
Russian Red: (red string) The popularity of this garlic has to do with its spicy flavour and lingering aftertaste. The red string on these bulbs lets you know Russian Red is very bold and does the job when you need a big garlic kick either raw or when cooked. Bulbs can vary in size, but the cloves are large and marbled with deep reds and brown.
Mennonite: (ME) Our newly sourced seed stock of this Porcelain variety has shown great results in 2023. 100% success rate in planting and the majority of bulbs are very large with 5-6 cloves. Plants are tall and the scapes are equally impressive. We are still experimenting with its flavours.
Italian Purple: (black string) A very aromatic garlic with bold purple spots on the bulb and dark tan cloves within. This Rocambole garlic with a black string has a medium rating on the spicy scale with warming flavours and a mild garlic aftertaste. Italian Purple is our go to garlic for tomato sauces, it can be simmered for a long time without damaging flavours.
Khabar: (pink string) The plant is small, bulbs are squat, the cloves are round and hard to peel, but the flavours are unmatched. Khabar with its pink string is the most underrated garlic we grow. No other garlic has the complexity of flavours that Khabar offers. It can be spicy and nutty, sweet and pungent, and the only aftertaste is your taste buds asking for more.
Leningrad: (LN) If there ever was a garlic made for English gardens this is it. Leningrad grows into very uniform looking plants. Size and shape are very consistent with tall rigid looking scapes. The bulbs are large tightly wrapped in white, with soft coloured cloves. Leningrad is not as spicy as most Porcelains. As a result there are noticeable complexities in its flavour.
Marchand and Corin of Garlicloves began planting garlic in 2012 with only one dozen Ontario bulbs. They spent the next several years collecting varieties and keeping meticulous data on each one. Today they grow their incredible garlic in the Kawartha Lakes, and in the Minden/Haliburton area.
