Jalapeno Peppers are a relatively medium sized chili pepper that ranges from dark to olive green. It lands between 4,000 and 8,500 units on Scoville scale. They have a thick wall and moderate cavity. Jalapeno peppers are usually ready for harvest in Ontario in early fall.

Jalapeno peppers are a great addition to dishes that want a slightly spicy flavour. They can be diced and added fresh to salads, dips, casseroles, and baked goods. They also are excellent for adding to soups, broths, or stews, and can be stuffed for a spicy treat. These spicy peppers can be dried, pickled, or frozen for longer storage through the off-season months, and hold their shape and texture well once thawed again.

Peppers originated in South America and have been enjoyed since 7, 500 BC. Sweeter (not hot) varieties like bell peppers were cultivated in the 1920s, in Szeged, Hungary. Before then, peppers were 'chilis' and were hot, which comes from the chemical capsaicin, which produces a burning sensation in mammals. Peppers are techinically a berry, which makes them a fruit. Jalapeno peppers are usually picked while still green, however will turn orange, yellow, or red when left to ripen on the vine. Jalapenos were originally cutlivated in the capital city of Veracruz, Mexico.
