Superior potatoes are oval-round in shape and have white skin and flesh. Their high specific gravity makes them suited to boiling, baking, and fries, however they are most widely grown for potato chip manufacturing.

This cultivar was released by the University of Wisconsin potato breeding program in 1962, from Rhinelands, Wisconsin. It shares a parent variety with the Kennebec potato.
