Watermelon, a classic refreshing summer favourite among many Canadians! It has a dark green outer skin, light green inner rind, and a pink (or orange or yellow!) sweet and juicy flesh. Watermelons are ready for harvest in Ontario in late summer. A sweet, ripe watermelon is identified by its dark green rind, golden yellow spot on its underside, a deep, hollow sound when thumped, brown spots, webbing or scarring, and heavy for its size.
Watermelon is perfect for enjoying fresh on it's own! It can also be cut up and added into fresh summer salads, smoothies, and juices. It can be made into wine, syrups, or can be frozen for longer storage. The rinds can be pickled, and the whole watermelon itself can be used to grill or smoke meat, or as a container for juices and drinks.
Watermelon is the fruit of a vine plant. It first flowers, and then grows a fruit, similar to zucchinis, squashes, and apples. The fruit grows on the ground and is fed from the vine. Watermelon originates from northeastern Africa. Wild watermelon was domesticated in Egypt by 2000 BC. Sweet dessert watermelons spread across the Mediterranean world during Roman times. The fruit had begun appearing in European herbals by 1600, and was widely planted in Europe in the 17th century as a minor garden crop. It came to North America with European colonists and African slaves. There are many varieties that exist today. Watermelons were cultivated for their high water content and were stored to be eaten during dry seasons for hydration, not only as a food source, but as a method of storing water. Early watermelons were not sweet, but bitter, with yellowish-white flesh and difficult to open. Through the process of breeding, watermelons later tasted better and were easier to open.
